Blackpool Tower celebrates 130th Birthday

Blackpool Tower has turned 130 years old and the operators of the famous structure are asking people to share their personal memories of the iconic tower and send photographs.

Celebrating 130th birthday

Blackpool Tower is the structure that everyone looks for when they get closer to the seaside resort but many don’t realise that the tower is well over 100 years old. In fact, Blackpool Tower is celebrating its 130th birthday this year (May to be exact) and it’s fair to say that the attraction is still as popular as ever.

One million annual visitors

Indeed, around one million people pay a visit to the tower each year and this number is slowly increasing year-on-year. As well as the Tower Eye which gives visitors a fantastic view across the Irish Sea as far as the Isle of Man (on clear days), the Tower and associated buildings also include other attractions such as the famous Tower Ballroom and the ever popular Tower Circus which is the oldest of its type in the world.

Share your stories

Blackpool Tower was opened to the general public on 14th May 1894, so you’ve actually missed its official birthday. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of time for you to share your stories with the operators who will publish some of the best recollections both online and in a book which will be displayed in the tower itself.

Tallest in British Empire

Inspired by the much taller Eiffel Tower in Paris, Blackpool Tower was the tallest man made structure both in the UK and across the British Empire at 518ft when it opened 130 years ago.
