Black History Month 2024 is taking place from 1st October to 31st October 2024 with a whole range of events and activities throughout the event.
Black History Month
Black History Month started in the USA and was recognised formally by the US government in 1976, while the UK first celebrated the event in 1987. This is an internationally recognised celebration of the culture, heritage and history of the black community with a vision for the inspiration and empowerment of future generations throughout the world.
Contributions and achievements
Those of Caribbean and African heritage can celebrate their contributions and achievements that they have made to the culture of the UK throughout the month, while the event helps raise awareness of the effects of racism and how negative stereotypes can be challenged.
History and culture
Blackpool Black History Month invites local residents and visitors alike to celebrate and explore the history and culture of the UK’s resident black population with many events taking place throughout the town from the start of October until the end of the month.
Blackpool Tower
Blackpool Tower was illuminated in yellow, red and green to mark the beginning of the event on 1st October and the structure will be lit in these colours on 12th, 19th, 26th and 31st of October until 7:30pm.
Immersive experiences
Events throughout the month include immersive VR experiences and other informative events where visitors can learn more regarding the impact of migration as well as hear stories of the battlefield which show the big changes over the past century as the journey carries on right through to the present day.
