Around 50 dolphins spotted close to Blackpool coast

Dolphins are common along the coastline of Blackpool but visitors to the town were treated to a rare display on Thursday morning with around 50 of the aquatic mammals being spotted close to the coast.

Jumping out of the water

Many holidaymakers to Blackpool long to get a glimpse of a dolphin or two when walking along the famous promenade, however a pod of around 50 dolphins was caught on film by the Blackpool Council beach patrol team last week (Thursday, August 17th), the mammals jumping out of the water on their way north along the coast.

Recent sightings

This display came after a few days of relatively calm tides and warmer Blackpool weather and is the latest – albeit by far the largest – pods of dolphins to be seen in recent years along the Blackpool coastline. In June 2022 a pod of dolphins were spotted close to the shoreline while two months later two bottle-nosed dolphins and a calf were spotted alongside Ainsdale Beach.

Excellent footage

This latest display has been welcomed and will surely result in holidaymakers keeping a closer eye on the Irish Sea in the hope of spotting the dolphins return south again in the coming days or weeks. The Beach Patrol team got excellent footage of the dolphins but did you see them or get any photos and videos?
