Blackpool Zoo to welcome their first newborn baby elephants
It’s all hands on deck at Blackpool Zoo as the famous attraction finalises preparations for the imminent arrival of the first of two baby elephants.
Deliveries of oak tree trunks
Never before has there been a baby elephant born at Blackpool Zoo but that’s about to change as the leading attraction makes plans for the arrival of two not-so-little 100kg additions to the resident herd of Asian elephants, plans which include soundproofing and landscaping. Mother and daughter residents Noorjahan and Esha are expected to give birth later in the year and there have been deliveries of oak tree trunks in preparation for the new arrivals, these being placed strategically around the elephant’s enclosure. The elephants use the tree trunks to help exfoliate their rough skin while they will come in handy during labour as the animals can push against them.
Memory foam mattress
There is also a delivery of 500 tonnes of sand sulphate due in the coming weeks and the elephants will use this in order to give themselves a pedicure when they dig, while it also acts in much the same way as a memory foam mattress for when the animals sleep. The delivery will arrive with 30 tonnes at a time.
New arrivals will be a massive boost
This is a very exciting time for everyone associated with Blackpool Zoo and the preparations for the new arrivals have been going on for some time. Asian elephants are an endangered species with numbers declining sharply in the wild over recent years, therefore these new arrivals will be a massive boost with regard to the management of this species.
