Permission granted for construction of new Blackpool Multiversity
Permission has been granted to Hawkins/Brown for the development of a mixed-use multiversity development in Blackpool town centre.
Massive investment
Blackpool has seen some massive investment in recent years and the news that permission has been given for a mixed-use ‘multiversity’ in the town has been welcomed by business leaders. Proposals for the demolition of existing derelict and semi-derelict buildings and the construction of two educational blocks were approved by Blackpool Council in early April and this paves the way for the development to get underway.
Education and office use
The scheme comprises of a total floorspace area of 21,625 square metres in the building allocated to Blackpool & Fylde College, while a second building earmarked for education or office use will consist of a floor area of 12,690 square metres.
Social and economic benefits
The existing 59 buildings on the site will be completely cleared and given the nature of the existing buildings, many of which were in an advanced state of decay, Blackpool Council stated that their loss was acceptable. Indeed, this new development will provide obvious social and economic benefits despite the loss of some residential properties.
Talbot Gateway development
The UK government’s Levelling Up fund has given £40 million to the project in order to help boost provision for education and skills. The new development is situated close to the planned Talbot Gateway phase three development which consists of a seven-storey building which has been earmarked for use by the Department of Work & Pensions.
Full details of the new build elements for the new Multiversity development will be provided later this year.
