Blackpool’s Big Dipper turns 100 this year
One of the most iconic attractions at the famous Blackpool Pleasure Beach will be celebrating its centenary in 2023. Thrill seekers have long been enjoying the Big Dipper at the heart of the Pleasure Beach with the ride first carrying passengers in 1923. Indeed while there have been many bigger and faster rides at the venue over the years, the Big Dipper remains a firm favourite amongst visitors with many famous names strapping themselves in. The likes of Wayne Rooney, Olly Murs, Harry Hill, Julie Walters, HG Wells and Hollywood icon Diana Dors have all taken rides along the 3,295 foot long track which offers passengers amazing views of the Blackpool coastline.
Blackpool’s Big Dipper is now the oldest continually functioning rollercoaster in the country, carrying its first passengers on 23rd August 1923 with tickets initially costing just one shilling for the ride. Today the ride carries 840 passengers each hour and it lasts for approximately three minutes.
The Big Dipper has survived one world war as well as a serious fire in 1975 which severely damaged the attraction. Over the years there have been numerous improvements which have made the ride safer as well as more exciting.
There are a whole host of events planned in 2023 to celebrate this big milestone in the Big Dipper’s history and more information will be released once it becomes available.
