Blackpool Illuminations to be switched off for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II
Blackpool Illuminations are well renowned and the 2022 renewal of the ever popular spectacle is again in full swing with many thousands of extra visitors flocking to the promenade each night of the event.
Nevertheless those planning to visit on Monday 19th September are going to be disappointed as organisers have announced that they are to switch off the illuminations as a mark of respect for the recent death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This switch-off will be for one night only and the illuminations will return the following evening and continue for the remainder of their extended run which comes to an end in early January.
The Blackpool Illuminations are a huge boost for the local economy and while the cost of this year’s event will be increased due to the energy price crisis, this will pail into insignificance when compared to the estimated £300 million that it will bring into the local area.
This year’s Blackpool Illuminations will last four months following the success of last year’s extended event. The 2022 Illuminations got underway last week and they will run until early January.
The Blackpool Illuminations stretch from Starr Gate right through to Bispham with a length of just under six miles in total. The display is made up of over 1 million LED Lamps and there are many new features along the route as well as numerous old favourites. Not only that but there are many heritage trams on which you can travel along the seafront, some of these also being illuminated.
