New £30m Conference Centre opens in Blackpool Winter Gardens

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has opened a new £30 million Conference Centre in Blackpool’s iconic Winter Gardens.

The PM said that it was an “honour” to open the new centre during the Conservative Party’s spring conference at the Winter Gardens earlier this month. This was the first major conference at Blackpool for the Tories since 2007 and it was a big success on all fronts.

The PM said: “I hope this will be home to many events for years to come, bringing people together from across the UK in the heart of Blackpool.”

Having been constructed on the site of a car park, the new Conference Centre is the first and only major development to be undertaken at Blackpool Winter Gardens since the Opera House was added in 1939. £20 million of government funding was provided for the project and the remainder was sourced from the Blackpool Entertainment Company and the local council.

The entirety of the Blackpool Winter Gardens is currently being refurbished and this will provide the venue with the latest facilities.

Blackpool Council leader Lynn Williams recognised the importance of developing the iconic venue. She said: “Major conferences in Blackpool bring thousands of delegates in the town centre, who in turn spend money in our local shops, restaurants and hotels, helping our businesses thrive and allowing them to take on new workers.

“This will be a real game changer for business tourism in Blackpool.”

This new development will certainly put Blackpool very much on the map as one of the top conference and exhibition centres in the UK.
