Blackpool Illuminations 2022: All you need to know

When do the 2022 Blackpool Illuminations get switched on? How to see them and everything else you need to know about the hugely popular display.

The world-famous Blackpool illuminations have been a mainstay in the popular seaside resort since 1879 and over the decades the amazing display has attracted countless millions of visitors. Having enjoyed a lengthened stay in 2021, the illuminations will return later this year for another extended period.

The illuminations stretch for over six miles from Starr Gate all the way to Bispham and visitors can wonder at the display either on foot, by car or on one of the famous Blackpool trams, many of which are actually illuminated themselves for the event.

If you plan to visit Blackpool Illuminations when it is switched on in September 2022, we’ve compiled a handy guide giving you all of the key information.

When are the illuminations switched on?

In 2022, the Blackpool Illuminations will be switched on on Friday 2nd September. The display was turned on by Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas in 2021 and we will provide you with full details of which celebrity will be turning them on in 2022 once it has been announced.

When are the illuminations switched off?

The Blackpool Illuminations will be switched off on Monday 2nd January 2023, that’s an amazing 121 nights of bright lights along six miles of the famous promenade.

Will there be any new illuminations for 2022?

The full list of illuminations which will make up the display in 2022 is yet to be announced, however if 2021 is anything to go by then you can expect a host of new illuminated attractions alongside the classic favourites that we enjoy each year. Once again the Astral Dreams laser show will beam lasers onto Blackpool Tower for the duration of the illuminations and this lighting display will be accompanied by an original score.

Will there be a Lightpool Festival again in 2022?

Yes there will be a Lightpool Festival in 2022 but as yet the exact dates for this hasn’t been announced. Nevertheless this free Festival is expected to take place in October and run for around ten days. The location for the Lightpool Festival is no restricted to the promenade. It also takes place across the town in locations such as the Winter Gardens, St John’s Church, Houndshill Shopping Centre and Grundy Art Gallery.

What is the best way to see the Illuminations?

The best way to see the Illuminations is by foot but with a length of six miles, it is advisable to travel along the promenade by car. Nevertheless when taking in the display by foot you can enjoy the stalls and shops along the promenade as well as the holiday atmosphere and buzz. Alternatively you can travel the entire route using one of the famous Blackpool trams, some of which are even illuminated themselves.

Where to park

Limited parking is available all the way along the seafront, however the best way to enjoy the display is to park at the Park & Ride facility at Blackpool Airport.
