Update on Little Marton Windmill restoration
Following damage caused by the storm of May 2023, plans to fully restore the well-known Little Marton Windmill have ground to a halt after the four sails were found to be completely rotten.
Damaged in a storm
Little Marton Windmill on Preston New Road has been without sails since being damaged in a storm 17 months ago and work to repair the structure has still not commenced. The Grade II listed structure is owned by Blackpool Council and they have pledged to organise a repair programme alongside the local community while the cap of the windmill receives urgent repairs. The sails, which have been removed, have been found to be completely rotten and the hope is that the missing sails can be replaced with help from the Friends of Little Marton Windmill.
Emergency repairs a priority
The necessary repairs will be carried out when weather and ground conditions permit and any emergency repairs will be undertaken as a priority. It will take up to three years to completely repair the cap of the windmill and a survey will fully establish the condition of the structure and highlight any necessary repairs.
Longer term prospects
Looking at the longer term prospects for the structure, Blackpool Council have met with the Friends of Little Marston Windmill and discussed a possible programme of improvements which include a complete repainting of the windmill, plans for internal access and a complete replacement of the sails. The council will also work in partnership with some third party funders such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other bodies.
