Blackpool Tramtown still on track for major redevelopment
Blackpool Tramtown is fast becoming one of the more popular attractions in town and the future of the museum is looking rosier following the decision to redevelop the facility.
Heritage tours along the seafront
Blackpool Tramtown Museum is located at the old tram depot on Rugby Road and the attraction has been enjoying an upsurge in visitor numbers since opening their gates to the general public. Here is where all of the historic trams can be found, vehicles which plied their trade up and down the famous promenade before the advent of the new trams in 2012. Indeed, a large number of the original trams have been restored or are in the process of being rebuilt and they operate heritage tours along the seafront as far as Fleetwood.
First-class visitor attraction
Visitors to Blackpool Tramtown can see behind the scenes at this working depot and see the trams up close as well as view the facilities such as the paintshop and workshops. Nevertheless, some of these facilities here are starting to show their age and plans are afoot to develop the site into a first-class visitor attraction. The current workshop has been earmarked for demolition and the site will be used for electric charging points for the new electric bus fleet, while the main depot buildings will be restored to their former glory with a new overall roof, improved walkways and a dedicated shop and cafe.
Greater number of visitors
These improvements will allow Blackpool Tramtown to welcome a greater number of visitors each year and offer them a better experience. Funding has been provided by Blackpool Council as well as gate receipts and public donations.
