Blackpool receives £1.8m grant for more trees
United Utilities have provided Blackpool with a grant of £1.8 million to plant new trees in and around the town, according to the town Council.
Starting in 2025, Blackpool is set to see a huge increase in the number of trees, the first wave of these trees set to be ready for the planting season in the new year. As part of a ten year programme running from 2020 to 2030, thousands of trees have already been planted in the town although over 1300 have already been ripped up and sold commercially, while over 2000 were damaged in 2020 and 2021. In 2022 it was reported that the cost of planting six trees in Edward Street and construct an underground watering system was in the region of £174,000.
Cabinet member for climate change, councillor Jane Hugo, said:
“We are delighted that Blackpool Council has been awarded £1.8m from United Utilities Green Recovery Street Trees Project. The tree recovery initiative will enable us to plant more trees to increase our canopy cover, increase tree population, tree resilience and biodiversity, and is another great step forward in our vision for a greener Blackpool.
“The council already works in partnership with people and organisations to manage, protect and expand the town’s trees and woodlands. This new funding means we can go further, helping to create a greener and healthier future for residents.
“The first wave of these trees will be ready for the 2025 planting season. We’re really looking forward to this work taking place, and to see the positive impact it will have for many years to come.”
