Work on Blackpool Airport’s new terminal to start this spring

Following the approval of the planning application last year, work will soon get underway for a new passenger handling facility at the under-used Blackpool Airport.

Scheduled flights

While Blackpool Airport is still used for general aviation flights, it is hoped that one day passenger flights may return to the facility and the construction of a new passenger handling facility could help pave the way for the return of scheduled flights to UK destinations and possibly further afield, as well as charter flights. Work on the project will start in the spring and the airport owner, Blackpool Council, have appointed SBL Ltd for the £616,000 contract, this sum taken from a pot of around £54m which has been set aside for development projects.

Significant step

Having opened in 1909, Blackpool Airport is one of the oldest airports in the UK and this is a significant step in the ten-year masterplan. There are proposals for the construction of a new air traffic control tower as well as new hangars and a fire-fighting facility. Additional plans include an aircraft maintenance facility, new fuel farm and a possible solar farm which would, if it went ahead, mean the loss of an under-used secondary runway.

Continued growth

Steve Peters, Blackpool Airport managing director, said: “Our vision for Blackpool Airport is one of continued growth, sustainability and positive economic impact.

“Everyone is working really hard to make Blackpool Airport attractive again and we look forward to welcoming new customers for the first time. Confidence is building and there is a real sense of optimism about the future.”
