New passenger terminal at Blackpool Airport given green light
Plans to develop a brand new passenger handling facility at Blackpool Airport have been cleared for take off, paving the way for passenger flights to return to the under-used facility.
New terminal
Proposals for the construction of a new terminal facility for Blackpool Airport have been given the green light with approval being given by planners at the Town Hall. Using delegated powers, Fylde Council gave the proposals the go-ahead and a date has now been set for completion of the new facility. The decision has been set out in a report, which states: “The proposal complies with the development plan and would improve the economic, social and environmental conditions of the area. It therefore comprises sustainable development.”
Recent meeting
This decision comes on the back of a recent meeting of Blackpool Council which is the owner of the airport (although the application falls under the jurisdiction of Fylde Council). The meeting made it clear that the facility would be retained for aviation purposes as part of the strategy for the Enterprise Zone at the airport. There had been planning documents submitted for a solar farm on airport land but this would have meant the loss of a runway.
Arrivals and departures
The new scheme will involve the demolition of an admin building on the site and its replacement by a single-storey structure with a VSP (vehicle search point) and new office facilities. There will be an enhanced arrivals and departures facility which will be able to handle up to 45 passengers while a larger security checkpoint will be included in the plan.
Return of scheduled flights
This new development will allow Blackpool Airport to increase the number of charter flights, executive and corporate aircraft it handles, while it may conceivably open the door to future development which could include the return of scheduled flights to UK or European destinations.
