Developers move into former Bonny Street Market site
After closing the public last autumn, the site of the popular Bonny Street Market is now being used as a construction yard ahead of a new development.
Leisure Development
The very popular Bonny Street Market closed for business in November 2022 following the termination of its lease by Blackpool Council. The site is a part of a larger area of land earmarked for a £300 million leisure development. The area will be used by contractor Ballast Nedam who will start work on a multi-storey car parking facility later this year. Once complete, the 1,306 space car park will be handed over to Blackpool Council in order to be fitted out. The original plan was to have the facility open by August although this now seems rather optimistic.
Multi Storey Car Park
The contract includes the construction of access roads to the new multi-storey car park and this requires the company to relocate their current offices and storage facilities to the former Bonny Street Market site. The contractor has been handed a licence to use the site until 8th December, 2023.
Hugely Popular
Bonny Street Market traded for 37 years and was hugely popular with both tourists and visitors alike. Prior to closing in November last year, it operated between April and November each year, seven days a week. The stalls were finally removed in January.
200-room Hotel
The next phase of the development will be a public square and heritage centre, while full planning permission is in place for restaurants, bars and holiday accommodation. A 200-room hotel, entertainment spaces and restaurants are also planned for future phases.
