Calls for Blackpool to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest

A local MP has launched a petition calling for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Blackpool, many UK towns and cities vying to become the venue for the giant global TV and music event.

Following the unsurprising announcement that the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest won’t be hosted by this year’s winners Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, numerous towns and cities across the UK are looking to host the huge event. Blackpool South MP Scott Benton believes that the Lancashire seaside resort should be a consideration and he is being backed by many local businesses.

He said: “I was glad to read the announcement that the UK will host Eurovision 2023. Where better to host the competition than Blackpool, the traditional home of British entertainment?

“And with our newly refurbished theatre and brilliant conference centre it could not come at a better time.

“ Where better to host the competition than Blackpool, the traditional home of British entertainment?

“Hosting Eurovision would provide a massive boost to the town and our local economy. Blackpool would be a fantastic location for Eurovision as we have ample hotel accommodation and first-class venues.

“I will be urging the local authority to put in a hosting bid as soon as possible. This Government has invested massive sums into entertainment venues in Blackpool; let’s show them off to a global audience!”

The organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest, the European Broadcasting Union, has stated that any host venue will need to accommodate an audience of around 10,000 and be relatively close to an international airport with sufficient hotel accommodation for the expected 2,000 spectators, journalists and delegates.
